Fortescue signs $2.8 billion pact for carbon-free mining fleet
Specifically, FMG will buy 475 zero-emission machines from Liebherr to replace two thirds of its mining fleet operating in Western Australia. These machines include 360 autonomous battery-electric trucks, 55 electric excavators and 60 battery-powered dozers, equipped with an emission-free battery power system developed by Fortescue Zero, Fortescue's technology arm, the release said.
Previously, FMG announced to purchase 120 battery-electric trucks in 2022. The new deal, which triples that number, represents a significant step toward eliminating emissions from FMG's Australian iron ore operations "by the end of the decade," according to Andrew Forrest, executive chairman of Fortescue.
Validation of the full autonomous battery-electric solution is anticipated to be complete in early 2026, and the large-scale emission-free mining ecosystem developed by the two companies will be available to the rest of the mining industry in the near future, FMG expected.
To reduce its carbon emissions during operations, Fortescue also kicked off a green iron ore project in Western Australia last month, as Mysteel Global reported.
